The South Dakota Catholic Conference supports House Bill 1110, a bill that would ban abortions based on an unborn child having a Down Syndrome diagnosis. Such abortions compound the grave evil of abortion by eugenically targeting certain children. Tragically, some countries in the world have gone so far as to claim to have “eliminated” Down Syndrome amongst their populaces, when in reality they have eliminated the people who have this genetic disorder. All human life – regardless of disability – has profound dignity as made in God’s image. House Bill 1110 ensures this foundational truth is fully recognized by South Dakota law.
